The Florist, bound with The Lady’s Drawing Book, Herbarium A, and Herbarium B
Object: two printed books with engravings, two collections of pressed flowers and plants
Author/Creator: Augustin Heckel, unknown
Date: 1753, 1759, unknown

Augustin Heckel (1690-1770) was a painter, printer, draughtsman, and watchmaker. Known in particular for his watercolor and gouache flower paintings, he published two books with engravings of his flower designs, The Lady’s Drawing Book (1753) and The Florist (1759). The books contain instructions on drawing techniques and color mixing. There are plates depicting a variety of flower specimens including some step-by-step images breaking down the drawing process. The herbaria were likely made in the late 19th- or early 20th-century by an unknown maker(s).

The goal of this treatment was to stabilize the materials and to rebind and rehouse the materials in a form that enables access.
