Herbarium

An herbarium is a collection of dried plant specimens. The practice of drying plants to preserve them extends back several centuries. In the 16th and 17th centuries, herbaria were commonly in a bound structure, with the specimens glued down directly to the pages. By the 18th century, herbaria were more commonly fixed upon separate, loose sheets of paper to enable ease of species comparison, though the practice of having herbaria in bound volumes continued with informal collections. Additionally, attachment methods during this time transitioned to either leaving the specimen loose within a folded sheet of paper or to fixing the specimen with glued down paper strips or with sewing.

This model was made at Winterthur and was inspired by its gardens.
